Recommendations On Best Houston Broadband Provider

We called 10 different computer repair shops in Houston looking for information on the fastest internet provider for the price as well as asked questions about the reliability of the service. We received information from these technicians working behind the desk that were happy to give their two cents on the matter of broadband internet. We had previously called several technicians in the San Antonio area and received their two cents on the matter but each area is a little different and that is why speaking with a bonafide computer nerd is the only way to really get the skinny on the topic.

I will go down through a list of 10 responses I received along with their vote on which high speed internet provider they like and use. At the end I will tally up all the votes and you will have the knowledge that would have taken you an hour of annoying calls had you not found this helpful resource. We will list each store name a long with who they recommended and their two cents on the matter.

Directron

I called Directron out of Houston which is a discount computer super store. The computer repair technician told me that Comcast is who he uses and he recommends them because they are fast and reliable for playing video games and downloading movies and files. He said they are not available in all areas so you might end up having to use someone else depending on your location. Comcast provides internet through the cable lines which means you share the internet with your neighbors. If you have a lot of internet users on your street it could cause a lag although this is hardly ever a problem. Comcast usually doesn’t require that you sign a contract so if performance was bad in your area it would be easy to get off of their service. This company has settled on Comcast as the best high speed provider.

Rapid Repair Computer Service

The technician that answered at this shop told us that they personally use ATT DSL because it is reliable and fast enough for their needs. He said you really only have two choices in Houston which would be Comcast also known as Time Warner or ATT DSL. Sometimes one will be faster in your area then the other. To know for sure you would need to ask your neighbors who are on ATT if they are experiencing slow behavior with their service. ATT will make you sign a 1 year contract while Comcast will let you be on their service on a month to month basis. Overall this company prefers ATT Broadband Internet.

35 Computer Repair

The technician recommended Comcast as the service he uses and recommends. He did not have much more information to give as his store was busy at the time. Comcast gets another vote.

Express Computer Repair

I called Express and he had a hard time understanding what I was asking but I eventually got out of him that he uses Comcast and likes them because they are a fast high speed provider. Comcast is accepted by yet another computer technician. These guys should know more then anyone right?

B & D Computers

He said that some customers of his have had problems with Comcast and he himself uses ATT Yahoo DSL. He said he would recommend starting out on ATT Yahoo’s cheapest option and upgrade if you need a faster speed. He mentioned that ATT will try and get you to upgrade to the higher speeds but he recommends going with the cheapest service to start out with. This computer shop uses ATT’s High Speed internet, he recommends it, and he says his customers have had issues with Comcast. It looks like ATT gets another vote for being the best bang for the buck.

CTC Computers Sales & Service

The technician at this store recommended ATT DSL because they offer 3 meg download speeds for $19.99 and you will get a reliable fast service at this price. He said this package will be better then Comcast and he uses it for himself personally and hasn’t had a problem with it. As an added note when you are using ATT DSL you are on your own line and are not sharing it with the rest of the neighborhood in comparison to Comcast cable internet where the entire neighborhood shares the available bandwidth on the cable line wich can cause some reliability issues when you don’t get the speed they promised to you. This gives ATT high speed internet one more vote.

I have comcast but I am very dis-satisfied with them how they handled the outage after hurricane IKE. They do not care about their customers and have not issued the credit they bragged about to the Houston Chronicle. Comcast said they WOULD ISSUE FULL CREDIT for time you did not recieve. I called, I sent emails and letter but not response at all. I am not in the AT&T area, even thought my sister down the street has AT&T internet, it seems I’m at the end of the line. IS THERE ANYONE ELSE THAT PROVIDES HIGH SPEED INTERENT.

I live in Pecan Park in SE Houston and have Comcast (formerly Time Warner). When I started it was blazingly fast but over the years it got slower and slower until now I’m getting a mere 400 to 500kps in the evening, slower than DSL. This morning there was a four minute lag to connect to the mail server. If you want to surf the net at 3am it would be okay, I guess, but during the day and evening it is overloaded.

I also agree about comcast. Slower and slower every month. VERY poor customer service. No managers ever call back. Errors and many hours on phone to solve errors from employee end.

Same thing in Colorado, when they took over there as well. I was in CO for 12 yrs.

I live on the North side of Houston and I have comcast. Same here over the past year the internet got slower and slower. speedtest.net(the place they tell you to go for speedtest) used to tell me I get some of the best in Texas in terms of speed now i get not even 1/2 of that went from over 1MB sec to 400Mb… The people you call to ask about it have no cluse like they just started working there yesturday. The guy I talked to didnt even know what tiered internet was…… He knew they had multi plains but didnt know what the meaning of tiered meant….

  5. Roadkill says:

Approximately every 4-5 months, we have consistent connectivy issues… and with out fail, every time requires multiple (useless) visits froma tech who may or may not show up on time and multiple calls to the call center (with a variety of techs with great to zero technical and personal skills). Each time…real ‘fixes’ require hunting down and placing several calls to the corporate office.

Once again… we’re having problems, 4 days now. No information, no answers…hell they can’t even be consistent on wether area work is being done etc.

I finally terminated my relationship with Comcast for all of the reasons previously mentioned. I was tired of their outrageous fees, extremely poor customer service and the service people who show up randomly and just throw cable in the middle of your yard or flower bed. Worthless service and I am sooo happy to be done with Comcast. Finally the frustration of dealing with incompetent tech support is over!

  7. TechMom says:

AT&T’s little gray Motorola 2210 modem is very hot and has a lifespan of <1 year. I’ve had 4 replaced so far. If you can talk to the service reps (the newer ones don’t know what they’re doing and simply go down a laundry list but be patient) and wait 1-3 days to get a new modem every year, the service is not too bad. I’ve never reached 1.7 mbps download and 0.5 upload even though it was advertised for 3.0/0.5.

  8. conspiracy says:

maybe, some of those guys who told u and advised u to use comcast, have the outsourced contracts with comcast co. to provide services…. u never know, they register a business in their own choice of name while they have a license and rep from other major companies as well aka authorized service/reseller…. just a deeper plundering

  9. Sam says:

I agree about the hurricane issue but I tend to disagree a little about the speed. I believe they offer different speed packages. I have no real issues as I have the fastest speed possible with comcast. Also, no contract just commitment.

I’m on the west side of houston.

PS…my power was out for almost a month after that hurricane. No power no internet. However, it took them an additional two weeks to get my internet running. However, they prorated my bill for the time lost. You had to call them and request it though. They didn’t do it without asking for it.
