Recommendations On Best Houston Broadband Provider

Wednesday, January 2, 2008
posted by admin

We called 10 different computer repair shops in Houston looking for information on the fastest internet provider for the price as well as asked questions about the reliability of the service. We received information from these technicians working behind the desk that were happy to give their two cents on the matter of broadband internet. We had previously called several technicians in the San Antonio area and received their two cents on the matter but each area is a little different and that is why speaking with a bonafide computer nerd is the only way to really get the skinny on the topic.

I will go down through a list of 10 responses I received along with their vote on which high speed internet provider they like and use. At the end I will tally up all the votes and you will have the knowledge that would have taken you an hour of annoying calls had you not found this helpful resource. We will list each store name a long with who they recommended and their two cents on the matter.

Directron

I called Directron out of Houston which is a discount computer super store. The computer repair technician told me that Comcast is who he uses and he recommends them because they are fast and reliable for playing video games and downloading movies and files. He said they are not available in all areas so you might end up having to use someone else depending on your location. Comcast provides internet through the cable lines which means you share the internet with your neighbors. If you have a lot of internet users on your street it could cause a lag although this is hardly ever a problem. Comcast usually doesn’t require that you sign a contract so if performance was bad in your area it would be easy to get off of their service. This company has settled on Comcast as the best high speed provider.

Rapid Repair Computer Service

The technician that answered at this shop told us that they personally use ATT DSL because it is reliable and fast enough for their needs. He said you really only have two choices in Houston which would be Comcast also known as Time Warner or ATT DSL. Sometimes one will be faster in your area then the other. To know for sure you would need to ask your neighbors who are on ATT if they are experiencing slow behavior with their service. ATT will make you sign a 1 year contract while Comcast will let you be on their service on a month to month basis. Overall this company prefers ATT Broadband Internet.

35 Computer Repair

The technician recommended Comcast as the service he uses and recommends. He did not have much more information to give as his store was busy at the time. Comcast gets another vote.

Express Computer Repair

I called Express and he had a hard time understanding what I was asking but I eventually got out of him that he uses Comcast and likes them because they are a fast high speed provider. Comcast is accepted by yet another computer technician. These guys should know more then anyone right?

B & D Computers

He said that some customers of his have had problems with Comcast and he himself uses ATT Yahoo DSL. He said he would recommend starting out on ATT Yahoo’s cheapest option and upgrade if you need a faster speed. He mentioned that ATT will try and get you to upgrade to the higher speeds but he recommends going with the cheapest service to start out with. This computer shop uses ATT’s High Speed internet, he recommends it, and he says his customers have had issues with Comcast. It looks like ATT gets another vote for being the best bang for the buck.

CTC Computers Sales & Service

The technician at this store recommended ATT DSL because they offer 3 meg download speeds for $19.99 and you will get a reliable fast service at this price. He said this package will be better then Comcast and he uses it for himself personally and hasn’t had a problem with it. As an added note when you are using ATT DSL you are on your own line and are not sharing it with the rest of the neighborhood in comparison to Comcast cable internet where the entire neighborhood shares the available bandwidth on the cable line wich can cause some reliability issues when you don’t get the speed they promised to you. This gives ATT high speed internet one more vote.

San Antonio Texas

Who has the fastest broadband internet service in San Antonio Texas?

San Antonio Broadband Internet

I have listed a top 10 list from a survey I took from computer repair shops in San Antonio. They have given me very valuable information on who an internet customer would be most happy with when choosing a high speed internet service. Take a look at the list and at the bottom I give the results. Feel free to comment if you have an opinion.

One way to find this out is to call a bunch of computer repair shops in San Antonio and ask the tech guy. These places are filled with nerds who have a few computers at home and spend a majority of their free time playing video games like World Of War Craft and other army shoot em’ up games. They need a fast connection and have probably tried out a couple of different broadband internet companies in their lifetime. They should know the fastest high speed internet provider for the price among their own knowledge and what they have learned from their friends.

10 Computer Repair Shops Give Their 2 Cents On Broadband Internet

I called 10 of these companies and took a survey and I found out some interesting information. The 1st computer repair shop I called recommended Time Warner Cable, or Roadrunner High Speed Internet as it is also known, as the fastest for the price as well as very reliable.

Shop 2

The 2nd computer shop recommended Time Warner as well but also mentioned AT&T’s U-Verse is good if you are in the right area in San Antonio. U-Verse is the equivalent to Time Warner’s Cable internet. It is a fiber optic high speed service and is a little cheaper then TWC’s broadband internet. If you don’t live in the right area he recommended to stay away from it as it isn’t nearly as fast as Time Warner’s. All in all he said that you will be happiest with Time Warner.

Computer Shop 3

I called store number 3 and they said Time Warner is great and you will fall in love with it if you need to download videos and play video games. And I quote him saying, “They are as fast as heck! Be sure to ask for Time Warner Premium for residential.” Apparently the premium service is what you want to be on as you won’t have to worry about download issues if you like to download videos and software. Also, if you are playing a video game that doesn’t work very good with a lagging connection you want to get on this as well.

Geek Central 4

Store number 4 told me that you will have a better up front cost with AT&T high speed internet but within a year you will be paying the same amount you would pay for Time Warners premium high speed internet. He said, “If it were me I would go with Time Warner since you are going to be paying about the same in a year anyway. Time Warner is faster and I would go with it.”

Computer Repair Shop 5

Store number 5 told me he has AT&T at his computer shop and Time Warner Roadrunner Internet at his house and prefers Roadrunner. He said AT&T makes you sign a 2 year contract and if you break it you have to pay a pretty large fee. He also said Roadrunner speeds are faster and they are flexible. For instance he said, “If you notice you are paying more then you would like with Time Warner you can call them and tell them you are thinking about switching to AT&T and they just might lower your internet bill to a promotional price if they think you will leave them.” He did say that depending on the megabytes per second you sign up for you can get on a really cheap plan with   that is about 1/3rd the cost of Roadrunner but you may not be happy with it. The good news is you can always upgrade to a faster plan if the speed isn’t fast enough with AT&T. The bad side to going with AT&T is the lengthy contract. If you won’t be staying long in your apartment or house you don’t want to be signing a long term contract if you will have to cancel it and pay an early termination penalty later on.

Shop 6

I called computer repair shop number 6 by the name of Jo Jo’s and he said that Earthlink High Speed Internet and Roadrunner were the most reliable and he suggested I sign up with Roadrunner Time Warner. He said AT&T DSL in San Antonio is just not that reliable but did recommend for business as it is much cheaper then using Time Warner.

Store 7

Store number 7 said I really only have 2 options in San Antonio Tx, I can go with AT&T High Speed or Time Warner Roadrunner High speed internet. He was very unbiased about it and said you can go with one or the other depending on which company you like the best. His general help was like this, “It’s basically your choice I can’t make a recommendation but who ever you decide I would go with that one.” This shop was no help at all but he was quite diplomatic about it.

Big Number 8

Store number 8 said he personally uses Time Warner for the business line as well as his home service and recommends it because it is faster. He said, “Definitely Time Warner if you are looing for speed.” In his opinion he said, “you really only have two options and that would be AT&T DSL or TWC Roadrunner.”

Computer Help 9

Store 9 said there are two he would recommend and that is AT&T U-Verse which is their fiber optic high speed which is comparable to Roadrunner’s speeds and Time Warner Roadrunner. He personally uses Roadrunner and said that is who he would go with.

Website Maker Number 10

Web site creator store number 10 had the best information of all. He said like most everyone that you have those same two choices, AT&T and Time Warner. He said that with DSL you will find that AT&T usually advertises their slowest option which of course is fairly cheap. He said the problem is that it is not fast enough for a lot of peoples needs. He personally uses Time Warner Roadrunner Internet and said he likes it because it is fast and he is on with them month to month. Not being locked into a contract is a good thing and the service with Roadrunner is faster. It appears that Roadrunner high speed internet is the winner. Most people prefer it and you can get off of it at anytime if you do decide to switch to AT&T. AT&T does have some faster options as they advertise 3 tiers of service speeds. Another added benefit according to this store is that ATT is a 1 user line meaning you do not share your internet speed with the rest of the neighborhood unlike cable internet. With Time Warner it is like a party line and there is the potential that during peak times you may not receive the speed you are paying for because of everyone in the neighborhood being on the internet downloading songs and videos at the same time. None of the store owners have actually experienced this issue but there is the potential for this. Since you are not locked into a contract with TWC you don’t have to worry as you can switch to AT&T if you are ever not satisfied with the service.

High Speed Broadband Fastest Internet Winner In San Antonio Is………….

With 9 votes Time Warner Cable Internet wins as being the fastest most reliable broadband high speed internet provider in San Antonio Texas. 1 Vote is left at undecided and AT&T is left with a surprising zero votes as being the fastest high speed internet service in San Antonio and Bexar County Texas. Ouch! Although, look out as new service called AT&T U-Verve sounds like a rising competitor. Sign up with promotional Time Warner or AT&T discount offers here:

Best Broadband Aircard Wireless Internet Service

Tuesday, December 18, 2007

Looking For A Fast Remote Internet Connection?

Compare Wireless Aircard service
We have seen in most locations that the choice right now is between Verizon wireless internet service and Sprint. Both provide different aircards to connect up wireless that have their own cell phone number used to connect. The type of aircards you can get are a standard PCMCIA card or Express card that fits in a laptop slot or you can get a USB aircard. With the USB aircard you can connect it into your laptop or dekstop computer but the PCMCIA card and Express cards generally gets better reception for some reason. The Wireless PC Card is a great choice as you can cancel any broadband service you have at home and just use this which also gives you the option of going remote with it to Barnes and Nobles or Starbucks simply by inserting the card in your laptop. When browsing the internet in your car be carefull! If you live in the boonies you will find that a wireless aircard is usually faster and more reliable then satellite internet service. We definitely recommend going with an aircard.

How to Begin Aircard Comparison Search?

If you are ready to begin your search for the best available wireless internet pc card online discount offer then visit this site: Website I recommend choosing the PCMCIA PC Card or the more advanced Express Card with Sprint or Verizon. If you have an old laptop that can only take a PCMCIA card then the Express card usually comes with an adapter to make it double as a PCMCIA card as well. Currently Verizon’s wireless PC Card internet service dwarf’s the speed of AT&T. Sprint has a great coverage area in some of the more remote areas of the country. Check out and search what wireless internet provider supports your area by using this coverage area map locator. Click Here to Check Your Coverage area. You can pick between Sprint and Verizon, we do not recommend AT&T at this time as their speeds do not come close to matching the wireless internet speeds of Verizon. Sprint wireless PC card internet service has better coverage in certain remote areas and gives you more bang for the buck if you go over the 5 gigabyte download limit.

Aircard Service, Who I Recommend

If I could recommend the fastest wireless internet provider I would go with Verizon. You can get special deals on Verizon wireless aircards and compare with other wireless aircards at this site: 3G Store. If you need good coverage area across your state as well as the United States and decent speeds which are constantly improving then I would go with Sprint. You can compare their prices and options at this site: Sprint PC Card Internet Service

My laptop has WiFi. Do I need a laptop card?

With WiFi, you need to be within the limited range of a WiFi “hot spot” or access point. A laptop card and data plan from your wireless carrier let you access the Internet at high speeds from anywhere in the country where your carrier provides coverage – indoors, outdoors, or even on the road. With the Sprint and Verizon PC Card internet cards you can connect at faster speeds then satellite internet providers like Hughes internet and Wildblue offer. We want to warn anyone considering signing up with a satellite internet provider to think again.

It has been reported multiple times on the internet and by even our own neighbors and friends that the internet goes down frequently with satellite, the speeds are not as advertised and the 2 year contract allows for them to reduce your internet speeds if you start downloading too much. PC card internet service is much faster and you can take the internet with you where ever you happen to be.

Verizon wireless will give you the usb wireless aircard express card or PCMCIA aircard for free provided you sign a contract but I would highly recommend getting the express card or pcmcia card if you have a laptop as you will get better reception.

We have a site below to compare and sign up for discount wireless aircard service from all the major brands. This site is by far the authority source for everything you will need to setup a reliable and fast PC card/aircard wireless internet service. They have routers for the PC cards to broadcast the signal to all computers in a house, antennas to pick up a better signal and amplifiers to boost the signal if you stick the antenna up on your roof or TV antenna. The router and anntena is not required but it helps to broadcast the signal to other computers. If you do not get the wireless internet router you will only be able to access the internet on one computer at a time.

Buy an Aircard Router to Broadcast to all Home Computers

After you sign up for aircard service you may want to order a CradlePoint router (CradlePoint is the preferred choice) or linksys router for your Verizon, Sprint or AT&T aircard service depending on the provider you go with. You can purchase these affordably at 3G Store Simply go to PC Card Router

You can then put the Express card or PCMCIA aircard in the router and broadcast the signal to all computers in your house. Buying a router is not required to have PC card internet service but it will allow all computers in the house to access the internet at the same time, otherwise you will need to take the card out when done and put it in the other computer to gain access on a different computer. When you are taking your laptop on the road you can take it out of the router and put it in the laptop to go remote with it while on a vacation or business trip.

Compare Aircard Service Below

Click on Verizon Broadband or Sprint Broadband on the menu to the left after clicking on this link. Click Here

Should I get the USB Wireless PC Card?

This is a USB connection and not recommended as the Express Cards and PCMCIA cards will get better reception. If you live in a rural area and need a reliable connection I would go with an Express card or PCMCIA aircard as not only will the reception be better but you can plug it into a Cradlepoint (Preferred Choice) or linksys router and broadcast the signal throughout the house to more then one computer.
